US Congressman. He was elected as a Jacksonian Democrat to represent Virginia's 9th, 11th, and 16th Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1821 to 1834, serving as Speaker of the House from 1827 to 1834. After he left Congress he was appointed as United States Minster to Great Britain, serving in that duty from 1836 to 1841. His son, John White Stevenson, would become Governor of Kentucky, and later served as a Senator from that state.
