U.S. Senator. Born in Montville, Connecticut, he moved as a child with his parents to Georgia, in 1796. There he later engaged in newspaper work, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1806 and commenced to practice law in Macon, Georgia. He was one of the five commissioners who laid out the town of Macon, in 1824 and was a member of the Georgia State Senate in 1824. In 1828, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Thomas W. Cobb, serving until 1829. After his term, he worked as editor of the Georgia Journal, presided over the first railroad convention in Georgia and was one of the first stockholders and directors of the Georgia Railroad. He died at age 49 while on the packet ship SS Home during a hurricane off the coast of North Carolina, near Ocracoke Inlet and the remains were never recovered.
