W CHRISTIE CHURCHILL
SINKS INTO LAST SLEEP

Prominent Louisville Man
Dies At Phoenix Hotel
After Short Illness

FAMILY WELL KNOWN

Relatives From Falls City
With the Sufferer
Until the End

W Christie Churchill, prominent Louisville clubman and society man of the Falls City, well-known all over the State, died at the Phoenix Hotel this morning at 12:40 o'clock from acute pulmonary oedema, a disease of the lungs, accompanied by swelling caused by an effusion of watery fluid from the blood vessels into the inter-cellular spaces.

With Mr Churchill at the end were Mr and Mrs Karl Jungbluth, Jr, Judge and Mrs Arthur Peter, Mrs Herman D Newcomb, John Churchill, Mrs S Thruston Ballard and A P Humphrey, Jr of Louisville.

The body will be taken to Louisville on the 8:20 Chesapeake & Ohio train this morning.

He passed away after a day of unconciousness and after a hard fight had been made by his physicians and nurses to save his life. The gravity of his condition, however, was recognized from the time he was stricken Friday night and there was little hope of his recovery from the start of his illness. No arrangements for the funeral have been made.

Mr Churchill, who was the last of the distinguished Louisville family of that name, was stricken with acute pulmonary oedema last Friday night at his room in the Phoenix Hotel. He had acted as one of the stewards at the race meeting given by Mrs Clarence LeBus at Hinata Farm in Fayette County Thursday, and had remained over with the expectation of attending the regular racing meeting which opened Saturday.

When he retired Friday night he was apparently in his usual good health but Saturday morning was too ill to arise and Dr Joseph Bryant and Dr F H Clark were summoned. They found his lungs seriously affected and their patient steadily grew worse.

Sunday he showed some improvement and Monday about held his own. Tuesday afternoon his condition took another turn for the worse and he sank steadily to the end.

Mr Churchill was the only surviving son of Samuel Churchill, whose family was prominent in Louisville and Kentucky for many years, and from whom Churchill Downs received its name. Since the death of his mother about four tears ago, Mr Churchill had made his home with Mrs Emily Zane and Mrs Julia C Blackburn, his aunts, at 1338 South Third Street, Louisville. He was an uncle of Mrs Arthur Peter, Mrs Karl Jungbluth, Jr, and Mrs Herman Newcomb, and a popular and widely known member of the famous Pendenius club.
