US Congressman. He was elected to represent New York's 24th and 25th Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1861 to March 3, 1869. On the last day of his term, March 3, 1869, he was elected as Speaker of the House, which he served for one day. He also served as a member of the New York State Assembly in 1857, as Mayor of Auburn, New York, from 1875 to 1876, and as a member of the New York State Senate from 1878 to 1879.
