U.S. Senator. He graduated from Salem College in 1924 and was an instructor at Salem College and West Virginia State Teachers’ College. He was a member of the West Virginia State House of Delegates, (1931-35) and a member of the U.S. delegation to the Interparliamentary Conference, in Oslo, Norway. In 1935, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1941. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was again a member of the West Virginia State House of Delegates, from 1942 until his death from cancer at age 49.
