William Vance was born Londonderry, NH in late 1759; in 1775 he marched as a 15/16 year old fifer, at Winter Hill; subsequent military - to Fort Ticonderoga, attack on Breymann Redoubt at Bemis Heights, Saratoga, Cherry Valley, Sullivan Expedition, West Point, discharge 1780. In May 1785 he moved to St. David, Charlotte Co., NB with Loyalist group Cape Ann Association; about 1800 moved to St. Andrews, NB; about 1803 to St. Stephen, then Upper Mills, NB; about 1810 to Baring, Washington Co., ME - he purchased the township, built first bridge crossing St. Croix R. between Maine and New Brunswick; from then until 1832 lived Baring, became major lumber "baron" of St. Croix River region and politician in Maine legislature; purchased entire townships (3 of them). 1832 moved to Readfield, Kennebec Co., ME. Had five wives (Nancy Stewart, Jane Parker, Mary Bell, Charlotte Holland, Charity Stafford). Jane died 1800 - all others divorced (and marriages and divorces were not done in the correct sequence - verified by court records). Seventeen children, including youngest daughter married Lot Myrick Morrill, who became Governor of Maine, US Senator, and U.S. Sec. of the Treasury under U.S. Grant. Town of VANCEBORO, ME named for him. At his behest, Town of CHARLOTTE, ME named by Maine legislature after his wife in 1825.
