U.S. Senator. He attended Pryor Institute, Emory College, graduated from the law department of Cumberland University, Tennessee, was admitted to the bar in 1913 and commenced to practice law in Birmingham, Alabama. Returning to Tennessee, he continued the practice of law and was district attorney general of the eighteenth circuit of Tennessee, (1923 to 1938). He was the prosecutor in the case of State v. John T. Scopes, the famous Tennessee "Monkey Trial" in 1925. In 1938, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate on November 8, 1938, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Nathan L. Bachman and was reelected serving until 1949. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he returned to the practice of law, until his death.
