US Senator. Admitted to the bar in 1850, he established his practice in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire where he served six terms as Milford's town moderator. He served three non-consecutive terms in the State Senate, from 1855 to 1856, from 1859 to 1860, and from 1869 to 1872. A Republican, he served in the US Senate for two terms, from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1879 and was the chairman of the Committee on Patents and the Committee on Privileges and Elections. He then moved to Boston, Massachusetts and resumed his law practice.
