SOUTH BEND---A career journalist with the South Bend Tribune, Lewis S. "Bud" Haber passed away on Friday, November 23rd. Son of Roy and Aouda Blaine (Smith) Haber, he was born on October 14, 1925 in Union City, Indiana and graduated from Union City High School in 1943. He entered the Armed Service in January 1944, and served with the First Army in the European Theater of Operations, with Battle Stars for the Rhineland and Central Germany campaigns. When he was en route through Marseilles, the Suez Canal and the Indian Ocean to the China-Burma-India Theater, the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. He was honorably discharged in April, 1946. Educated at DePauw University, he graduated in 1949 with a major in History and with a Master of Arts in History in 1950. It was at DePauw where he met his future wife, Lois Fassnacht, and they were married in South Bend on August 27, 1949. She preceded him in death in 2009. they returned to Greencastle, Indiana where both worked at the Putnam County Graphic newspaper. In 1951 he went to work as a reporter for the Elkhart Truth and then to the South Bend Tribune in 1952. He became the Tribune's City Editor in 1967 and was made Associate Editor in charge of the editorial page in 1970, his position until he retired in 1990. Bud was a member of First United Methodist Church of South Bend since 1951, and also a member of the American Red Cross and the South Bend Press Club. Bud and Lois have three children, Jonathan Mark, now in Missoula, Montana, Christopher Lewis of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Ann Elizabeth of Tucson, Arizona. Their four grandchildren are Andrea Haber-Stuk of Mattawan, Michigan, Elizabeth Haber of Madison, Wisconsin, Steven Haber of Seattle, Washington and Ben Haber of Missoula, Montana. Bud is also survived by his sister, Joan Busch of Royersford, PA. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 30th from 4 until 7 p.m. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. The funeral service will be held at the same location on Satruday, December 1st at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to: First United Methodist Church, 333 N. Haber, Jonathan Haber and Christopher Haber; his grandchildren, Andrea Haber-Stuk, Elizabeth Haber, Steven Haber and Ben Haber; and his sister, Joan Busch. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Lois (Fassnacht). A celebration of Bud's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 1st, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., where the family will receive friends on Friday, November 30th, from 4 until 7 p.m.
