U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Graduating from Yale College in 1802, he was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Northampton, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1808-09) and elected as a Federalist Whig to the Twentieth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1827-35). Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he was elected as a Whig to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Davis in 1841 and served until his death at age 41.
