US Congressman, US Senator. Elected to represent Michigan's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1843 to 1845. Also served as a Delegate to the United States Congress from Michigan Territory from 1833 to 1835, Delegate to the Michigan State Constitutional Convention for the 11th District in 1835, and United States Senator from Michigan from 1837 to 1839.
