From "Pine Log and Greek Revival - Houses and People of Three Counties in Georgia and Alabama" by William H. Davidson, 1964, pages 138-139:

When the Roper family bought the hill and bluff near the Chattahoochee River on which this house (Cherokee Hill) stands, it was covered with wild Cherokee roses, and they named it Cherokee Hill. Originally a one-story house, built about 1875-1880 by Phillip and Katie Anderson Lanier, it was remodeled by the Ropers in 1915-16 into a two-story house with wide front porch having square, fluted columns.
Cherokee Hill was graded into a park like estate, terraced, grassed and planted with elms, oaks, dogwood and crabapple trees. There was a herb garden, and it is recalled that flowers were everywhere, planted by Mrs. Roper, who was noted for her giant chrysanthemums and dahlias. Steps and walks led down the terraces to Third Avenue.
Mrs. Roper, who was Sarah Margaret Swanson of LaGrange, Georgia before her marriage, was born December 27, 1876, and died January 10, 1957. She was married to Joel Charles Roper, born March 3, 1873, died June 15, 1960. Their daughter, Mrs. Martha Roper Wood, now lives in LaFayette.
Cherokee Hill was furnished with many family antiques, and its living room, nearly 50 feet long by 20 feet wide, stretched across the entire front of the house, served by two fireplaces...
