John Macpherson Berrien (1781-1856) - Find a Grave Memorial

Presidential Cabinet Member, U.S. Senator. He was the only child of Margaret Macpherson and Major John Berrien. He graduated from Princeton College in 1796, studied law, was admitted to the bar and began to practice in Louisville, Georgia, in 1799. He was solicitor of the eastern judicial circuit of Georgia, in 1809 and judge of the same circuit, (1810 to 1821). During the War of 1812, he served as Captain of a volunteer company in the Georgia Hussars. After the war, he was a member of the Georgia State Senate, (1822 to 1823) and was elected as a Jacksonian to the United States Senate, serving (1825 to 1829). In 1829, President Andrew Jackson appointed him the 10th Attorney General, serving until 1831. He was again elected as a Whig to the United States Senate, serving (1841 to 1845). In 1845, he was yet again elected to the United States Senate, serving until 1852. After leaving politics, he lived on his estate until his death at age 74.
