HIGGINS, BENJAMIN L.—Age, 31 years. Enrolled, August 19, 1861, at Syracuse, New York, to serve three years; mustered, in as captain, Co. A, 86th infantry, November 12, 1861; as major, March 3, 1863; as lieutenant-colonel, May 3, 1863; as colonel, July 1, 1863; wounded in action, July 2, 1863, at Gettysburg, Pa., and November 27, 1863, at Locust Grove, Va.; discharged for disability caused from wounds, June 25, 1864.
He established a "daguerreotype gallery" before the days of photography with is father-in-law John M. Clark. He served several terms on the Syracuse City Council and was elected Chief Engineer Volunteer Fire Department until the War when he raised a company of firemen and entered the 86th Regiment.
A B.L. Higgins was seriously injured in the 1841 gunpowder blast in Syracuse. This could be him.
