General's Daughter, Widow
Katherine Winans Maxwell, 84, the daughter and widow of Army generals and the mother of two Army officers, died Thursday at Bethesda Naval Medical Center. The cause of death was asepsis and cardiac failure.
Mrs. Maxwell, who had lived in Washington since the early 1950s, was born at Fort Supply in Oklahoma Indian Territory. Her parents, Maj. Gen. and Mrs. Edwin B. Winans, were stationed there at the time. She was educated in schools in Tokyo, Japan, and Albany, N.Y.
In 1914, she married Russell L. Maxwell, who retired from the Army in 1946 as a major general. They had two sons, Robert and William, both of whom were graduates of the Military Academy at West Point and both of whom were Army officers. Both are deceased. Gen. Maxwell died in 1968.
