Burton W. "Burt" Marvin began his career with nine years at The Chicago Daily News, where he became cable editor, then telegraph editor. After one year each on the faculties of Northwestern and Columbia universities, he became Dean of the School of Journalism at the University of Kansas, 1948-1965. He served two years as associate general secretary for communications of the National Council of Churches before joining the faculty at the School of Journalism, Syracuse University, in September, 1968. He directed the Religious Journalism and Mental Health Information programs there. He was Assistant Dean there when he died in 1979 at age 65.

He was president of the American Association of Schools and Departments of Journalism; chairman of the accrediting committeee, Ameircan Council of Education for Journalism; national board member of Methodist Information; vice-president of Sigma Delta Chi, men's journalistic society; Rotary Club president; church lay leader, and member of the U.S. interpretation committee of the World Council of Churches.

His international activities included visiting professorships at the University of Teheran, Iran, and Tel Aviv University, Isreael, and conducting workshops for journalists in Africa.

Professor Marvin co-authored a mass communication survey textbook; wrote the chapter on the United States in the UNESCO book The Training of Journalists; and published articles inThe Saturday Evening Post, Rotarian, Quill and other periodicals.

He held bachelor's and master's degrees, respectively, from the Univesity of Nebraska and Columbia University and received an honorary doctorate from Southwestern Collge. He was listed in Who's Who in America.

He married Margaret Medlar Marvin (1914-2010) on 15 Jan 1938 in Lincoln, NE. Margaret's obituary mentions that she was preceded in death by their daughter, Mary Louise. Surviving Margaret were a daughter, Anne Marvin and husband Michael Caron, Lawrence, KS; two sons, Charles and wife Betsy Wilson Marvin, Atlanta, GA, and Robert and wife Patricia Marvin, Lawrence, KS; and 10 grandchildren.

The 1920 census says Burt was born in Massachusetts (we know from the 1917-1918 draft registation that his father taught at Tufts College). The 1930 census (below, as listed by FamilySearch) says he was born in Michigan, but the 1940 census (when he was a newspaper copy reader in Chicago) again says he was born in Massachusetts.
