U.S. Senator. Although he studied law and was admitted to the bar, he did not engage in extensive law practice. Involved in local politics, he was a member of the board of supervisors for Macoupin County, Illinois and successful in mercantile pursuits. Relocating to Dakota Territory, in 1888, he settled on a farm near Cando, Towner County. He was judge of the Towner County Court, (1890-94), member of the Cando Board of Aldermen, Mayor of Cando, also engaged in the real estate, banking and agricultural pursuits. In 1909, he was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Martin N. Johnson, serving until he resigned in 1919. He was the only U.S. Senator and the oldest living U.S. Senator ever for 2 distinct intervals. He resumed his former business activities until his retirement in 1921, then moved to California, where lived until his death at age 87.
