U.S. Senator. At an early age, he moved to Missouri and then California. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1854 and proceeded to practice law in Amador County, California. He was a member of the California State Assembly, (1855-56) and served in the California State Senate, (1869-76). In 1879, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1885. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 56.
