United States Representative. He taught school while studying law and, after passing the bar, commenced the practice of law in Liberty and Natchez, Mississippi. He served in both the Mississippi Territorial Legislature and the State Constitutional Convention of 1817. He was elected to the United States Congress from Mississippi and served from 1819 until his death in 1826.
