U.S. Senator. Moving with his parents to Kentucky in 1795, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Campbell County. Relocating to Indiana, he was a ferryboat operator, city judge of Brookville and was a member of the first Indiana State House of Representatives in 1816. In 1816, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the U.S. Senate and reelected twice serving until his death.
