Alabama Governor. Chauncey Sparks served as the Governor of Alabama from 1943 to 1947. He was a candidate in 1938 but was defeated. Under the state constitution, Alabama governors at the time could not serve consecutive terms, thus Sparks left office without seeking reelection. In 1950, Sparks ran unsuccessfully for reelection as governor. He supported states rights and segregation of races. Leaving politics, he devoted the rest of his life to his private law practice in Eufaula. He served a State Court Judge from 1911 to 1915; member of the Alabama State Legislature from 1919 to 1923, and 1931 to 1939; and delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Alabama in 1948. Sparks graduated from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia in 1907 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and received his law degree in 1910. He was a bachelor .
