US Congressman, US Senator. Served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Elected to represent Alabama's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1859 to 1861. Also served as Representative from Alabama in the Confederate Congress from 1861 to 1865, Delegate to the Alabama State Constitutional Convention in 1875, and United States Senator from Alabama from 1880 to 1897.
