U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Moving to Missouri, in 1838, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1840 and commenced to practice law in Monticello, Missouri. In 1847, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses, serving until 1851. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed Charge d’Affaires to Colombia, New Granada, serving (1853-54). In 1855, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1861.
