U.S. Senator. He graduated from the College of New Jersey, in 1836, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1840 and practiced law in Morristown, New Jersey. Moving to California, in 1849, he engaged in mining and practiced law in San Francisco. He was a member of the California State Senate, (1852-54, 65-71) and judge for the district of San Francisco, (1855-6l). In 1873, he was Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Eugene Casserly, serving until 1875. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he practiced law and was collector of customs at the Port San Francisco, from 1885, until his death at age 72.
