Nebraska Governor. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain of Company D, in the 27th Iowa Infantry, Union Army. After the war, he engaged in livestock trading in California and relocated to Nebraska, in 1870. There he laid out the town site of Red Cloud, served as probate judge of Webster County and was elected to the Nebraska House of Representatives, in 1872. In 1874, he was elected as a Republican the 4th Governor of Nebraska, serving until 1879. During his two terms, immigration incentives were promoted, a new state constitution was sanctioned and agricultural developments were endorsed. After leaving office, he lived in retirement until his death at age 71.
