U.S. Senator. Moving to Detroit, Michigan in 1855, he entered into a business career as a purchasing agent of the Detroit & Milwaukee Railroad and an organizer of the Michigan Car Company in 1863. He also became president of the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Railroad, was president of the Detroit Board of Park Commissioners and a member of the Detroit Board of Estimates. In 1889, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until his death.
