US Senator. A lawyer, he was serving as Attorney General for the state of Maine when he was appointed as a Democratic Senator to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John Fairfield. He served from January 5 to June 7, 1848, and was succeeded by future United States Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, who had been elected to the seat in a special election.
