Merton was born in Osborne County, Kansas and had lived in Ocean Springs since 1996. Berger, Capt. Retired, spent 24 years of service in the United States Army with tours in the Philippines, Iwo Jima, Guam, Alaska, Germany, and various stateside posts. He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Battle Stars in the European Theater during WWII. Berger's military membership included the Reserve Officers Association, VFW, and American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Adam Berger and Alice Mardock Berger; his brother, Gordon Berger; and his sisters, Hazel Wilson and Beverly Berger, all of Kansas.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Loys Evans Berger, son and daughter-in-law Johnny and Sally Berger of Easton, CT, daughter and son-in-law Anne C. and William E. Stietenroth Jr. of Ocean Springs, and daughter Bonnie C. Berger of Grand View, Missouri. One granddaughter, Davona Mitchell and husband Ronald Mitchell, and one great-granddaughter, Caroline Mitchell of Biloxi. Two brothers, Elvis Berger and wife Anna of Lawrence, KS, and Clyde Berger and wife Ruth of Lindsay, CA; three sisters, Ione Ribeau of Ottawa, KS, Melba Homewood of Luray, KS, and Weltha Adams of Chicago, IL; one sister-in-law, Darlene Berger of Verona, MO; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
