Son of Isaac Wilson and Elizabeth Cooke Wilson, pioneer settlers of Floydsburg, James was born in 1795 in Augusta County, Virginia. He earned his military rank in the War of 1812, having enlisted in the 2nd VA Militia under Capt. Thomas Brooks. While he was at war, his family removed to Jefferson County, KY (the part that is now Oldham County).

After the war, James joined his parents in Oldham County and lived there for the rest of his life. He was a shopkeeper, a farmer and merchant. James married Emeline Brown Oglesby, daughter of Jacob Oglesby and Isabella Watson Oglesby, on 14 Nov 1833 in Oldham County. James was appointed surveyor for the Town of Floydsburg when it was incorporated on 11 Jan 1830. His parents and wife also are buried in the Floydsburg Cemetery.
