US Senator. He enlisted in the Confederate Army at the start of the Civil War, and was mustered in as a Private in Company H, 3rd Florida Infantry regiment on July 21, 1861. He was wounded in action at the November 23, 1863 Battle of Missionary Ridge in Tennessee, and was captured by Union forces. He spent the rest of the war as a prisoner in Camp Morton in Indianapolis, Indiana, and was paroled in 1865 as a Sergeant. Later in life, after serving in the Florida State Legislature, he was appointed as a Democratic Senator from Florida to the United States Senate, filling the vacancy caused by the absence of Senator Charles W. Jones (who eventually died in an asylum for the insane). He served from 1887 to 1899.
