US Congressman. Born near Brownsville, Indiana, he studied law at Crawfordsville, was admitted to the bar in 1850 and commenced to practice law in Lebanon, Indiana. He was a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives (1861-64), member of the Indiana State Senate, (1864-67) and common pleas judge of Boone County, in 1867. In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third and Forty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1877. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 72 in Washington, D.C.
