US Senator. Served in the United States Army during World War I. Elected as a Senator from Connecticut to the United States Senate, serving from 1952 to 1959. An unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Connecticut in 1950, he was a staunch supporter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, helped to sponsor legislative proposals for restricting rights of labor unions, and headed several manufacturing companies in Connecticut before entering politics in 1950.
