US Senator. Born in Ireland, he served during the Civil War as a Private in Company D, 125th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. After the war he served as a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives in 1879, He then relocated to California, where he served first as a California State Court Judge from 1886 to 1887, then as a Justice of the California State Supreme Court from 1888 to 1891. In 1911 he was elected as a Senator from California to the United States Senate, serving from 1911 to 1917.
