US Congressman, US Senator. Born in Springhill, Missouri, he moved to Arkansas in 1883, graduated from Dickson College Tennessee, in 1896 and taught in country schools (1896-99). He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1900 and commenced to practice law in Osceola, Arkansas. He soon moved to Jonesboro, Arkansas, continued to practice law and was prosecuting attorney for the second judicial circuit of Arkansas, (1908-12). In 1913, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-third Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1921. Not seeking renomination, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1921 and served until his death due to a blood clot in the coronary artery at age 60. His wife Hattie Wyatt Caraway, was the first woman to be elected and serve as a US Senator.
