U.S. Congressman, Missouri Governor. Educated at Dr. Henderson's Classical School Tennessee, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1825 and established his legal career in Jefferson City, Missouri. Entering politics, he was Missouri Secretary of State, (1830-35), was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives in 1836, was justice of the Missouri State Supreme Court, (1837-39) and was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh Congress, serving (1841-43). In 1844, he was elected as a Democrat the 9th Governor of Missouri, serving until 1848. During his tenure, telegraph service was initiated within the state, nineteen new counties were formed, an Iowa boundary disagreement was resolved and the Mexican War was dealt with. After leaving office, he relocated to California, served as the Mayor of Stockton, in 1851 and was a prosperous rancher until his death at age 84.
