Georgia Governor. Born in Halifax County, North Carolina, he moved to Georgia, with his family in 1785, received a rudimentary education and served as a Captain of the Greene County Militia in 1793. He was justice of the peace for Hancock County in 1799, justice of the Inferior Court (1802-10), a member of the Georgia General Assembly (1805-06) and a member of the Georgia Senate, (1810-16). In 1817, he was elected the 29th Governor of Georgia and served until his death at age 48.
