U.S. Senator. Educated by his mother, he later studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1824 and commenced to practice law in Henderson, Kentucky. He was a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives (1830, 41) a member of the Kentucky State Senate in 1836 and Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky, in 1843. In 1852, he was elected as a Whig to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Henry Clay, serving until 1855. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and engaged as a planter until his death at age 74.
