U.S. Congressman , U.S. Senator. Moving to New York, he studied law, admitted to the bar in 1822 and commenced to practice law in Oneida County. He was surrogate to Oneida County, (1827-31, 35-39), supervisor of the town of Rome New York, (1829-30, 33-34) and a member of the New York State Senate, (1831-34). In 1837, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress, serving until 1839. After his term, he was appointed as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Silas Wright Jr., serving (1844-45). After leaving the Senate, he was judge of the Supreme Court for the fifth district New York, (1864-1972), president of the board of trustees of Hamilton College and vice president of the American Colonization Society, until death at age 89.
