Paul, known as LaVerne in his early years, grew up in Iowa. In his school years he enjoyed wrestling and was in a band. During the Great Depression he supported his young family by working for the county on road maintenance. During WWII he moved to Minneapolis to work at the Ford Motor Plant in St. Paul, which is where he continued to work until retirement in 1967. He and Mildred dabbled in real estate investments over the years and enjoyed a lake house on Lake Koronis near Paynesville, Minnesota.
