Upon the outbreak of the Mexican War, he was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Kentucky Volunteer Infantry regiment, and was killed in action at the head of his troops by Mexican lancers at the Battle of Buena Vista, Mexico and was interred on the battlefield near his commanding officer, Col. William Robertson McKee. Their remains were brought back to Kentucky, where they lie with other casualties of the battle around the Kentucky War Memorial in Frankfort Cemetery.
