U.S. Senator. Moving to South Dakota in 1884, he established the Citizens' Bank of Grand View, South Dakota and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He also established a number of banks in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. He studied law, admitted to the bar in 1888 and practiced law in Platte, South Dakota. He was prosecuting attorney of Douglas County, (1892-93) and a member of the South Dakota State Senate, (1894-95). In addition, he engaged in the real estate and loan business, plus was a member of the Democratic National Committee, (1904-15). In 1915, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1921. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, resumed his former business activities until his death.
