U.S. Senator. He graduated from Yale College in 1787, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Newport, Rhode Island. There he was clerk of the superior court of Newport County, (1794-98). In 1801, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Ray Greene, serving until 1805. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed by President Thomas Jefferson as United States commissioner of loans at Providence, appointed by President Thomas Jefferson as United States commissioner of loans at Providence, Rhode Island, in 1806 and appointed collector of customs at Newport, Rhode Island, serving (1820-34). He died at age 72 in Newport, Rhode Island.
