U.S. Senator. He came to the United States with his parents in 1880, settled in Rhode Island, went to La Salle Academy and was employed as a railroad freight billing clerk, (1893-96). He was insurance commissioner of Rhode Island, (1898-06), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1907 and commenced to practice law in Providence, Rhode Island. He served as justice of the district court of the fourth judicial district of Rhode Island, (1908-28), trustee of the Nathanael Green Homestead Association of Rhode Island, (1924-34) and secretary of the Providence County Courthouse Commission, (1925-34). In 1929, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1935. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he practiced law, he was a member of the Republican National Committee, (1944-52) and on the advisory counsel to the Associated Factory Mutual Fire Insurance Companies.
