Schoolmate of Henry David Thoreau; was engaged to marry Charles Emerson, brother of Ralph Waldo Emerson, but Charles died May 1836 before they wed. Nevertheless, Emerson considered her as a sister, she was a beloved "Aunt Lizzie" to his children, and he invited her into his transcendentalist circle.
