The daughter of General James and Mary (Hume) Steele, she married Henry Hastings Sibley May 2, 1843, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.

Although five of their children died as infants or young children, four grew to adulthood: Augusta Ann, born June 18, 1844, married Captain Douglas Pope; Sarah Jane, born May 29, 1851, married Elbert A. Young; Charles Frederick, born Sept. 11,1860, married Constance Locke; and Alfred Brush, born July 29, 1866, married Ann Thompson.

The three eldest children remained in St. Paul after marriage and Alfred moved to Montana and then to Massachusetts.
