US Senator. He attended the University of South Carolina, graduated from the law department of that university in 1891 and served as clerk of the Committee on the District of Columbia in the House of Representatives, (1891-93). He was admitted to the bar in 1893 and commenced to practice law in Cheraw, South Carolina. He also engaged in agricultural pursuits, was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1894-98) presidential elector on the Democratic Ticket in 1900 and served as a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1902, 1904, 1906). In 1918, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Benjamin R. Tillman, serving until 1919. After his term, he resumed the practice of law in Cheraw, South Carolina and died there at age 51.
