US Senator. Born in Washington, Connecticut, he graduated from the Gunnery Academy Connecticut, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1850 and commenced practice in Meriden, Connecticut. He was clerk of the Connecticut State Senate (1855 to 1856), secretary of the State of Connecticut in 1857. a member of the Connecticut State Senate (1861 to 1862), a member of the Connecticut State house of Representatives (1864, 1869) and attorney for New Haven County, (1877 to 1879). In 1879, he was as a Republican to the United States Senate and served until his death. While in office, he passed the Army Appropriation bill named the Platt Amendment of 1901, which was a rider attached to the military that governed US relations with Cuba, (1901 to 1934). He also introduced legislation in 1902, to establish the 640-acre Sulphur Springs Reservation, protecting mineral springs, then a part of Indian Territory in Oklahoma.
