Florida Governor, Florida House of Representatives member. He attended the Carolina Military Institute and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, in 1882. Relocating to Florida, he served in the Florida Militia as a Brigadier General until 1898 and was a Captain in command of Company C, in the 3rd U.S. Volunteer Infantry, U.S. Army, during the Spanish-American War. He also was a member of the Florida House of Representatives, (1893-95, 1903, 05). In 1908, he was elected as a Democrat, the 20th Governor of Florida, serving until 1913. During his term, the Montverde Industrial School was founded, several new counties were created and he endorsed legislation that produced better health conditions. After leaving office, he served as a delegate to the 1924 Democratic National Convention. The Gilchrist Bridge on U.S. Route 41 and Gilchrist County, Florida, is named in his honor.
