Born at the Governors Mansion in Richmond, Margaret Smith Randolph was the first child of Thomas Jefferson and Jane Hollins Nicholas Randolph; wife of William Mann Randolph. She was likely named for her maternal grandmother, Margaret Smith, Mrs. Wilson Cary Nicholas, formerly of Baltimore.

OBITUARY.
DIED—On the 20th Dec. last, at Edgehill, Albemarle county, Va., the residence of her father, Thomas Jefferson Randolph, Mrs. MARGARETTE S. RANDOLPH, consort of the Hon. Wm. M. Randolph, of this place; leaving a husband and two infant children to mourn her loss. This excellent lady, kind and affectionate as a wife, fond and devoted as a mother, filled all the relations of life with a christians hope of immortality beyond the grave.

All hush'd and o'er. Silent she sleeps unharmed."
