Kentucky Governor, U.S. Senator. He attended Transylvania University, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1818 and commenced to practice law in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Entering politics, he served as a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives (1828-31) and was elected the 9th Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky in 1832. Upon the death of Governor John Breathitt in 1834, Morehead assumed the duties as a Whig the 12th Governor of Kentucky, serving until 1836. During his term, the Kentucky association of professional teachers was authorized and the organization of the Kentucky common school society was recommended. After leaving office, he was reelected to the Kentucky House of Representatives (1837-38) and served as president of the State Board of Internal Improvements (1838-41). In 1841, he was elected as a Whig to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1847. After leaving the Senate, he retiring from public service and practiced law until his death.
